WHO Faces Major Staff Reduction Following US Funding Pullout

The global health organization revealed intentions to reduce its staff by almost a fourth – amounting to more than two thousand positions – by the middle of 2026.

Funding Crisis Prompts Major Restructuring

This move follows after the US, formerly the organization's biggest contributor, withdrew funding earlier this period.

The US government had been responsible for about 18% of the organization's total funding, creating a substantial budgetary shortfall.

Expected Workforce Reductions

According to organizational projections, the workforce is expected to drop from 9,401 posts in early 2025 to around seven thousand and thirty by June 2026.

This reduction of 2,371 positions includes staff reductions, employees retiring, and natural departures.

"The past year has been among the most difficult in our existence, while we undertook a challenging but necessary journey of prioritisation and realignment," stated the organization's leader.

Financial Gap Remains

This Geneva-based body currently confronts a funding shortfall of $1.06bn for the 2026-2027 period, amounting to nearly a quarter of its required funding.

This figure marks an reduction from a prior estimated shortfall of 1.7 billion dollars reported in May.

Not Included Finances

These budget calculations do not include a further $1.1bn in expected contributions from ongoing negotiations with various contributors.

A spokesperson for the agency stated that the present unsecured part of the biennial budget is in fact lower than in earlier years, crediting this to multiple reasons:

  • Reduced overall budget size
  • The launch of a fresh donor outreach effort
  • Higher in member states' required contributions

The restructuring initiative is currently approaching its end, paving the way for the organization to move forward with a renewed operational model.
